Crypto coins are growing popular in Zimbabwe as many people are turning to trading and online jobs to earn a living.
In Zimbabwe, cryptocurrency adoption has also grown significantly due to economic instability, hyperinflation, and strict capital controls.
According to CoinMarketCap, a price tracking website, there are over 15 million cryptocurrencies in the world, and that number is growing rapidly every day as more people are creating other crypto coins.
Despite there being many currencies in the world, only a handful are popular in Zimbabwe, and these include (but are not limited to):
1. Bitcoin (BTC)
This cryptocurrency is widely known and recognised in Zimbabwe and all over the world. Many Zimbabweans invested in Bitcoin and have profited from the rise in prices of the coin over the years.
Traders who are not afraid of taking risks use this coin to realise profits and for cross-border transactions. However, Bitcoin is a volatile currency that is not reliable for storing value.
2. USDT (Tether)
This cryptocurrency is a well-known and popular stablecoin in Zimbabwe. The USDT is popular due to its stability as it is pegged to the US dollar.

Many Zimbabweans use the USDT for remittances and preserving wealth against the volatile Zimbabwean dollar (ZWL). Others also use the coin for trading on popular platforms. Gambling sites are also beginning to accept this coin on their sites, proving that it’s fast becoming an accepted method of payment among Zimbabweans.

3. Ethereum (ETH)
Among cryptocurrencies, ether is second only to bitcoin in market capitalisation. Zimbabweans use this coin for smart contracts and decentralised applications.
The ETH is gaining traction among tech-savvy users and developers.
4. XRP
This cryptocurrency was built with the goal of improving international payments by providing faster, cheaper, and more efficient transactions.
XRP transactions can usually be settled in a matter of seconds (3-5 seconds), significantly faster than traditional banking systems or even some other cryptocurrencies. This makes it a favourable coin for some Zimbabweans.
Why are crypto coins popular in Zimbabwe?
The Zimbabwean economy has consistently demonstrated that it is not people-friendly. This is due to hyperinflation, which has caused the Zimbabwean dollar to lose its value rapidly. Because of this, Zimbabweans find that their local currency and banks are not favourable when storing money in its original value. This is why many are turning to Cryptocurrencies.

Zimbabweans abroad also favour using Crypto to send money home cheaply to their loved ones. They find crypto faster than traditional remittances like Mukuru, WorldRemit and many more.
The Zimbabwean government has strict and constantly changing policies for moving forex. Cryptocurrency becomes a safer alternative for many Zimbabweans to move money undetected.
